Well shot footage is only half of the result. The other half is born at the editing desk, where dozens of minutes of raw clips turn into a story that holds the viewer's attention. In this article we walk through, step by step, how video editing actually works, how long each stage takes and what affects the overall timeline.
Where the editing process begins
Before the editor touches the timeline, all the footage is sorted and backed up. For an ad spot this might be a couple of hours of raw clips; for a corporate film or an event shoot it can be several hours from multiple cameras. At this stage the audio is checked, the best takes are marked and a clean folder structure is built.
- Importing the footage and creating backups
- Selecting the best shots and takes
- Syncing video with separately recorded audio
Assembly and story structure
The first real editing step is the so called rough cut, a draft where shots are arranged in a logical order without fine polishing. This is where rhythm, scene order and running time take shape. It is exactly here that the direction should be agreed with the client, because changing the structure is far easier now than later, once effects and color grading are in place.
Detailed editing and graphics
Once the structure is approved, precise editing begins: transitions, text overlays, logos, animated graphics and titles. Social media video is adapted to a vertical format and given captions, since a large share of viewers watch with the sound off. At this stage every cut is trimmed to the frame.
Sound work
Audio accounts for roughly half of the overall impression. Dialogue is leveled, background noise is removed, and music and sound effects are added. In Latvia it is important to make sure the music is licensed for commercial use, so there are no takedown issues on social platforms later.
Color grading and the finishing touch
Color grading gives the video a consistent look and mood. First exposure and white balance are matched between shots, then a creative color grade is built to fit the brand style. After that the video is exported in the formats you need - separately for YouTube, for Instagram, and for presentations or TV.
How long it all takes
Timelines depend on the volume of footage and the complexity. Rough guidance from our own practice:
- Social media clip (15-60 sec) - 2 to 4 working days
- Ad or product video - 1 to 2 weeks
- Corporate or event video - 2 to 3 weeks
What usually stretches a timeline is not the editing itself but rounds of revisions. That is why we agree on the number of revisions upfront and sign off on each stage. You can learn more about how we work on our video editing service page.
